Back on the sales block. Received some interesting offers from the previous auction but not enough to be sold. I really hate to see this one go. This guitar has a couple issues however this is one striking classy player that you needn’t keep locked away.
This is an extremely rare 1962 Ebony Block tail SG Les Paul Custom in polaris white. Reportedly to be only 1 of 22 or 23 ever made. Tom Petty has been seen with one and you too can be the big dog on the block.
Serial number 800XX
The good stuff:
Three screaming original PAF humbucker pick-ups with the bottom decals still intact. The gold plated covers are appropriately worn.
This guitar is made to rock and all the pick-ups sing. Through a Matchless is pure tone to get you wet. This is one gorgeous guitar for a very discerning play and/or collector. Let’s just say this thing will hold it’s value due to it’s rarity.
Bought from a reputable SF Bay Area dealer who said he got it from the son of the original owner who purchased it new.
Original Ebony Block tailpiece with Abalone inlay. Gibson vibrola is better than those common wobbly side pull vibratos. Gold is very strong. Original nylon saddled non-wire ABR gold bridge. Original black reflector knobs.
It has the classic 61/62 neck profile which is wide and slender. It has the small neck heel. Abalone fret inlays are smooth and pearly. Ebony Fretboard is hardly worn. Frets are not the normal fretless wonder as they are much higher and rounder like standard fret wire which means playing and bending is as easy as pie.. Frets appear to be original as the neck binding looks untouched. No sanding marks at all. The peghead and head stock are perfect with the original with original truss rod cover.
Original gold plated Grover tuning pegs. Electrics all appear to be unmolested.
Comes with the original black and yellow Gibson hardshell case with brass plaque and leather handle. All 5 latches work and overall in fantastic shape (some wear outside on the bottom right bout. I have also a newer Gibson SG should you wish buy separately.
The not so good hence the much lower price:
The previous owner repainted the original Polaris white with correct Nitrocellulose paint however when drying it was propped the guitar up against something before the paint fully dried and cured which left some paint finish ripples on the back of the neck around frets 12-15 and a couple on the back of the Treble horn. It does not impact the wood and doesn’t not affect playing at all.
There are some paint cracks by the neck body join which means stress movement which is very typical of this era SG construction. (especially if you do neck bending) The neck body join is solid and holds tuning like it should however this should be looked at closer as it has the potential to get worse and easily strengthened with just some glue injection. Probably about £100-150 job but will let you determine
Please feel free to ask questions or ask for more photos. I really hate to see her go but I have other guitars that get first pick when I play out. And this guitar loves and deserves to be played.
