Up
for sale is a 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom. This guitar has a
wonderful vintage look. It is
in great condition for it's age. It has 2 very small pecks in front.
One near the
switch and one near the tone knob. There is also a white mark that may
come off that is on back. There is a small area of exposed wood on the
peghead horn in the usual place. A small chip near the right strap pin.
Most of the rest is all age related wear. Nothing
dramatic or all the way through the paint. The gold plating has worn on
part of the tailpiece. Some of the gold on the tuners is worn. Some of
it will
brighten up with a scrubee. The wear gives it a brass look instead of
gold which I kinda like better actually. It is a fast player due to
having the "Fretless Wonder" low/flat
frets. These are the original frets. All original except the pickguard,
switchtip and probably the knobs. I believe it should have mirror-top
bonnets but there is nothing exact in the 70's Norlin era. It does not
have pickup covers but does have the original T-top pickups. Original
pots with black SPRAGUE caps and correct dating numbers.
This guitar had a neck repair at one time
and had a light repaint in back afterward. The break was below the
nut/volute around 1st fret in a diagonal V on one side it looks like.
The volute appeared to do what it was designed to do, whch was prevent
breaking in the trusrod weak spot.
The repair and repaint are a great job. The paint is color-matched and
nito covered. As a reult of the repaint, it filled in half of the
serial number with extra paint and made it hard to see. This is also
because Gibson did a wonky job of stamping
this guitar because it looks like the stamp didn't seat flat (or was
dull) as the
beginning numbers are faint compared to the last 3. So I taped
off an area and
scraped back to the bare wood to get the serial in order to be sure
what it was. I put some flat black paint on
the bare wood and straightened up the scraped area to a box. The next
owner will want to possibly smooth it out a little with a file or
dremel and add a couple
coats of nitrocellulose over the serial area or some black gloss paint.
Then buff it. But only a very light coat or the serial will get filled
in again. You need to
also make sure there is no chemical reaction that will cause the paint
to
crack. I have confirmed the specs on this guitar and they are as
follows:
